The Ministry of Culture has announced the opening of an international public call for applications to select new directors for five of Italy’s most prestigious museums and archaeological parks. The initiative aims to secure leadership for some of the country’s leading cultural institutions whose directors have seen their terms expire.
The museums involved in the selection are the Royal Museums of Turin, the Accademia Gallery and Bargello Museums in Florence, the Colosseum Archaeological Park, the National Roman Museum and the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN). The new directors will thus succeed, respectively, Enrica Pagella, Cecilie Hollberg, Alfonsina Russo, Stéphane Verger and Paolo Giulierini, who no longer direct the five museums (the museums now have interim directors).
The goal of the announcement is to strengthen and enhance Italy’s cultural heritage, ensuring effective management that is capable of attracting an increasingly broad and diverse audience. The new directors will have to combine tradition with anopenness to the future, promoting innovation, inclusiveness and sustainability in museum management.
The selection will be conducted according to strict criteria of professionalism and international experience. Applicants will be evaluated by a committee of high-profile experts, composed of five members appointed by the Minister of Culture and chosen from among magistrates, university professors of law and cultural heritage, experts in economics and business organization, and executives from the Ministry of Culture or other public administrations.
Nominations can be submitted through the Ministry of Culture website, with a deadline set at 12 noon on March 6, 2025. The appointment will be for four years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional four years, subject to a positive evaluation of performance.
