Milo Manara's heroines vs. Covid-19. The cartoonist pays tribute to the heroes of our time with a series of drawings

Celebrated cartoonist Milo Manara, known for works such as The Paper Man, Caravaggio and The Game, pays tribute to all those who are working hard despite the spread of Covid-19 with a series of drawings.

Through social media, Manara has thus divulged images of a young Red Cross volunteer, a cleaner, a Carabiniera, a vigilante, a postmistress, a supermarket cashier, a truck driver, an errand girl, and, above all, a stoically posed doctor observing a giant version of the dreaded virus that is rampant these days. Always a feather in the artist’s cap, the female protagonists this time are put in place to thank those in the real world who are risking their lives to save the lives of others or to provide those services that cannot be missed in people’s daily lives.

Regarding the image of the Red Cross volunteer, Manara explains, “The Red Cross needs no introduction around the world means rescue and care for those in dire straits, from the single vulnerable person to entire peoples. The Red Cross is close to everyone, indeed in the collective imagination it is the very idea of relief. How can you not say thank you? In my career I have always celebrated the beauty of women, in these circumstances I felt like extolling other virtues such as courage and self-sacrifice, always declined in the feminine. Through this table I wanted to express my gratitude to all the volunteers on the front lines, to their great effort. Everyone knows what you do and is grateful. From this shared and collective feeling my drawing was born. I hope that art can have a primarily consoling address by taking us a little above and beyond the terrible time we are forced to live. It cannot erase the difficulties, but it allows us to see them with a more detached eye, lightening us up.”

On its institutional website, the Red Cross commented on the drawing as follows, “A familiar image for the whole country since the beginning of this emergency, but absolutely extraordinary when declined in the language of art: thanks to the master of Italian comics, Milo Manara, this image has become a drawing.”
