The Via Appia Antica could become a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Ministry of Culture has started the nomination process in the integral route from Rome to Brindisi and including the Trajan variant. In fact, the well-preserved infrastructural, archaeological architectural, funerary and civil testimonies of the Appian Way represent a cultural heritage of extraordinary importance.
“The Appian Way,” said Minister Franceschini, "is an itinerary to be enhanced and placed at the center of slow tourism in order to strengthen the offer of new attractions such as hiking trails and sustainable routes, which are fundamental for the development in a cultural key of inland areas, but also for the protection of our heritage. The Regina Viarum unites territories rich in an extraordinary cultural, archaeological and landscape heritage and has the characteristics to become one of the greatest European paths."
Theancient road axis was the first conceived as a “via publica” and is considered the prototype of the entire Roman road system with its 120,000 kilometers in length.
The nomination sees the involvement of many central and peripheral offices of the MiC: 74 municipalities, 15 parks, 12 cities, 4 regions, 25 universities united to protect, enhance and promote the site “Via Appia. Regina Viarum.” The goal is now to propose inscription as a “serial site,” a type envisaged by UNESCO in the Operational Guidelines of the 1972 Convention for the Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage.
After specific field inspections, with the support of all the Ministry Offices responsible for the different territories, the sections of the ancient road, with variants and branches, have been identified and perimetered, which will be presented as components of the site to be inscribed as they are considered most representative of the Exceptional Universal Value of the property and meeting the requirements defined by UNESCO.
