"The National Institute of Ancient Drama in Syracuse will enjoy important resources to bring back performances inspired by classical Greek and Latin plays to ancient stone theaters throughout Italy. An extraordinary heritage will thus be able to return to its original use, fostering greater knowledge of the roots of our theatrical tradition," these are the words of Culture Minister Dario Franceschini upon the registration of the decree that allocates one million euros to the “National Institute for Ancient Drama” Foundation.
The Foundation will benefit from this amount for the realization and promotion of performances in the sphere of classical Greek and Latin theater in stone theaters on the national territory.
INDA, the National Institute of Ancient Drama was born in 1913 thanks to the intuition of Count Mario Tommaso Gargallo. A reunion of aristocrats and wealthy people desired by the Syracuse nobleman thus gave birth to a bet that on April 16, 1914, brought classical plays back to the Greek Theater of Syracuse and since then has seen the greatest artists in the national and international scene perform in front of thousands of spectators. The Institute is more than 100 years old, and through the Academy of Ancient Drama Art it trains children and young people aged 5 and up.
