MiBACT has ordered the exercise of pre-emption over a manor house onGallinara Island, an island on the Ligurian coast located opposite the municipality of Albenga, to which it belongs.

In a note from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, it says that "the acquisition of the villa to the state patrimony, as stated in the report of the MiBACT Regional Secretariat for Liguria, would allow the return to public enjoyment of a part of the island, which would be used as an exhibition and operational headquarters for the Ligurian institutes of the ministry in which to enhance the exceptional archaeological, historical-artistic and landscape values that make the island unique in the national panorama. A wider usability of the island may be achieved through the involvement of the Naval Archaeological Museum of Albenga and the important underwater archaeological area. The villa lends itself to becoming a first documentation center, a research center and logistical base for future archaeological investigations to be carried out on the island and in the surrounding sea."

The villa will become an exhibition center open to the public.

MiBACT’s exercise of preemption comes on the eve of the legal deadline for submitting an application: the island was in danger of becoming the private property of a Ukrainian tycoon, as the transfer of ownership to a Monte Carlo company linked to Ukrainian tycoon Olexandr Boguslayev had taken place on June 17. Until 1842, Gallinara Island was owned by the Church and had then passed into private hands, specifically an LLC formed by nine Ligurian and Piedmontese families.
