MiBACT and Anas sign protocol to protect and enhance archaeological discoveries

The Ministry of Culture and Anas spa have signed a protocol for the protection and enhancement of archaeological heritage.

The Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (MiBACT) and Anas S.p.A. sign a memorandum of understanding for the enhancement of archaeological findings discovered as part of road construction sites. The agreement was presented during a press conference attended by Undersecretary for Culture Antimo Cesaro, Anas President Gianni Vittorio Armani, Director General for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape Caterina Bon Valsassina, President of the Archeolog association (the association established in 2015 by Anas to redevelop the finds) Guido Perosino, and President of the association’s scientific committee Simonetta Stopponi.

The protocol indicates the steps to be taken for the enhancement of archaeological discoveries: “It is a turning point compared to the past,” said Vittorio Armani, “and the goal is to abandon the practice of separateness and episodicity of interventions, to experiment with new collaborative paths and new strategic planning tools. With a logic shared with MiBACT, we are committed to launching in the field of culture new forms of public/private partnership on the basis of participatory methods to strengthen collaboration between public entities and between them and private actors for systematic enhancement of cultural heritage.” Cesaro echoed him, “The protocol establishes a strong synergy between MiBACT and Anas. If archaeological discoveries were once a hindrance, today they become an opportunity for development.”

Still, the protocol contributes to the creation of the figure of thesite archaeologist, a professional in charge of monitoring the progress of the work under the supervision of the contractor, and makes Archeolog a temporary concessionaire for restoration projects of the discoveries: the non-profit organization’s task will be to promote fundraising for the restoration, protection and enhancement of the finds. The protocol, Armani further stressed, will incentivize territorial development processes by making the territory an active part of the valorization process.
