McDonald's: first fast food restaurant-archaeological area opened

Last Tuesday, McDonald’s inaugurated in Marino (province of Rome) the archaeological area unearthed during the works for the opening of the fast food restaurant in the Castelli Romani town. The area involves a 45-meter-long stretch of road, dating back to the 1st-2nd century B.C., formerly connected to the Appia Antica: it was a road that led from Rome to Bovillae, an ancient city corresponding to today’s Frattocchie, the hamlet of the municipality of Marino where the fast food restaurant is located.

For the restoration and enhancement of the area, McDonald’s invested the sum of 300,000 euros: the works were conducted under the direction of the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the Metropolitan Area of Rome, the Province of Viterbo and Southern Etruria. From the fast food restaurant, customers and visitors will have access to an underground gallery that will allow them to visit the area free of charge. A series of captions installed on the path is intended to illustrate to visitors (with directions in Italian and English and differentiated between those for adults and those for children) the remains found.

As of today, it will be possible for everyone, first and foremost young people and schools, to take an evocative journey through time, along a roadway traced in the Roman era: a ’red thread’ of memory that reconnects the relationship of millennia-old lives and histories with the modern community. A new point of interest is also added for visitors who, in large numbers, traveling along the Appian Way, visit the city of Marino, attracted by its ancient charm.”
