Mayor chains himself to Lucera Fortress to save it

On Aug. 10, the mayor of Lucera chained himself in protest to the city's Fortress because of its conservative state.

On the morning of August 10, Lucera Mayor Antonio Tutolo, together with city councilman Leonardo Renzone, chained himself to the walls of the Lucera fortress, starting a hunger strike in protest in order to secure it.

It is a lofty Swabian-Angevin fortress, one of the most significant monuments in the province of Foggia, which is in danger of collapsing if action is not taken soon.
The mayor also wrote a letter to President of the Republic Mattarella, Prime Minister Gentiloni and Minister of Cultural Heritage Franceschini in which he said, “It is a real SOS to save the Swabian-Angevin Fortress also addressed to the German Ambassador and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as well as to the main competent political and institutional authorities. I believe that I have a moral and political obligation to do everything to ensure that a monument that has endured for more than seven centuries does not give way today in the face of neglect and indifference on the part of those charged with the protection and preservation of the country’s monumental assets. It is an obligation we all have to future generations, to whom we are obliged to hand down the heritage that has come down to us from the past, a heritage that belongs not only to this city or this nation, but, I believe, to humanity.”

Today, Aug. 12, the protest was halted because "after several phone calls with the superintendent of archaeological and cultural heritage, Dr. Simonetta Bonomi and Prof. Giuliano Volpe, president of the superior council for cultural heritage, the willingness to plan interventions that can no longer be waived at the Lucera fortress was communicated." The matter will be discussed on August 21.
