Marsala, cleanup work unearths forgotten Christian necropolis

In Marsala (Trapani), cleanup work carried out at the Niccolini Complex, a vast archaeological area in the immediate vicinity of the Sicilian city, brought to light the Christian necropolis that had long been hidden from view as it was overgrown with shrubs and weeds. The works, also carried out in other archaeological areas of Marsala, have thus allowed the “rediscovery” of the "Niccolini complex."

This was announced by the Regional Archaeological Museum of Lilybaeum (Lilybaeum is the ancient name for Marsala). “The absence of cleaning,” writes the director of the Regional Pole of Cultural Sites of Trapani and Marsala, Anna Maria Parrinello, “for many years had produced the uncontrolled development of brambles and Alianthus altissima plants (up to 15 meters high). And the dense vegetation had prevented access to the site, compromising the state of conservation of the Christian arcosoli, decorated with fresco paintings, and the valuable mosaic floor.” In the near future, the Niccolini area could be opened to the public to raise awareness of evidence of Christian funerary art.
