A short but incisive letter written to Culture Minister Dario Franceschini by the Archaeological and Art Museum of the Maremma, an important institution based in Grosseto: this is how the museum wanted, this morning, to raise the issue of the chronic lack of personnel in the cultural heritage sector, addressing the minister directly.
“We are willing to write it on bronze if necessary, or even on stone if that would serve to make our appeal even more meaningful, even more evident in the eyes of those who are at the helm of our sector”: so begins the museum’s missive. “A sector, that of cultural heritage, which has long been affected by the chronic lack of personnel for the supervision and management of museums, sites and archaeological parks throughout the country. The Maremma is no exception with the sites of Vetulonia, Roselle and Cosa in great need of new forces to ensure the protection, conservation and enhancement of our historical, artistic and cultural heritage.”
“The competition that was supposed to make up for these shortages,” the institute noted, “has been concluded but to date the necessary hires have not materialized; not only this but the 15 posts planned for our area have been decreased to 9 and it seems that a further reduction is planned. We want to think that this will not be the case, that instead the right contribution will be made to the aspirations of an area with a strong tourist vocation and which NEEDS its archaeological sites to complete its cultural offerings, just as all the people who live here NEED our artistic and archaeological treasures to be properly protected and enhanced in order to preserve the historical memory that serves as a connective for the entire Maremma community.”
“We at the Maremma Museum of Archaeology and Art,” the museum concludes, “together with the Directorate of the Archaeological Parks of Vetulonia, Roselle and Cosa and the Municipality of Grosseto therefore return to ask Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini for reassurances on the matter and a promise of a prompt resolution for this serious crisis in our sector.”
