The Marche region is applying for the recognition of historic theaters as a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site: in fact, it is the region with the highest density of historic theaters; in Macerata alone there are as many as twenty-three.
The Regional Department of Culture has therefore decided to submit to the UNESCO Directorate of the MiC General Secretariat the proposal for the UNESCO candidacy of Marche’s historic theaters.
“We have had a very promising first meeting with the Directorate of the Ministry’s UNESCO General Secretariat during which I presented the extraordinary wealth of historic theaters in the Marche region and represented the desire to invest in this heritage also through the UNESCO candidacy,” announced the councillor with responsibility for Culture of the Marche Region Giorgia Latini. "It is precisely in this direction that the region’s cultural policy is moving, on the one hand promoting projects and programs for the recovery, restoration and refurbishment of Innovateatri theaters, with the aim of adapting and refurbishing the Marche’s live performance space, and on the other hand supporting new forms of management of theater spaces with increasing participation of local companies and young people to create real community theaters."
"A unique heritage in terms of capillarity of historic theaters,“ the councilor added, ”a unique heritage also from an architectural and artistic point of view, a unique heritage on a cultural level for the social function they have fulfilled over the centuries: each of the smallest municipalities with its theater at the center of the historic core conquered an accomplished autonomy and self-sufficiency and a prestigious role in the surrounding territory, also responding to a more complex process of social aggregation and employment revitalization of the community."
“The ”Marche case,“ therefore, in light of its history and theatrical tradition, due to its uniqueness in the national context and artistic and socio-cultural value, could meet the requirements for UNESCO recognition as both tangible and intangible cultural heritage, that is, an expression and tradition that a community recognizes as an integral part of its cultural heritage so much so as to ensure a sense of identity and continuity,” he concluded.
