Orvieto Cathedral will soon undergo two major interventions worth more than one million euros: prevention from seismic risk and restoration of parts of the facade.

Orvieto Cathedral will soon be affected by two major interventions, financed with ministerial funds, for more than one million euros. Meanwhile, theOpera del Duomo di Orvieto announces that work on the first intervention called “Orvieto. Duomo Vulnerability reduction and restoration” for about 527 thousand euros.

Design activities related to the implementation of interventions for the prevention of seismic risk and restoration of parts of the facade of the Orvieto Cathedral for 540 thousand euros have been started in these days. Architect Maurizio Damiani is solely responsible for the intervention, while the design was entrusted to engineer Giovanni Cangi.

The work follows the Final Report on the five-year study and monitoring of the cracking framework and seismic behavior of Orvieto Cathedral, carried out by Enea and completed in April 2018.

The following interventions are planned: improvement of the seismic behavior of the towers and spires of the facade through consolidation of the masonry, helical stairs and spire cones with steel elements designed to form an effective connection between the internal and external facades; removal of weeds, elimination of lichens and fungi; consolidation and restoration of the exterior facings by redoing stucco work; revision of the stone apparatuses of the spires and pyramids; revision and redoing of lead and iron pivots and eventual replacement with another suitable and durable system; protective treatment of stone surfaces; consolidation and restoration of the decorated mosaic bands of the facade towers and revision of the mosaics of the upper parts of the elevation.

The work, which is particularly demanding, will also involve the Opera del Duomo.
