Madrid will have a new contemporary art museum, whereLatin American art will be the protagonist.
The announcement came just days when the Spanish city is abuzz with excitement about the ARCO fair.
Hosting the new museum will be aformer tobacco factory, called La Tabacalera, which in recent years has begun hosting cultural initiatives and events.
The agreement was signed between the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports and the Fontanals Cisneros Foundation (CIFO): the agreement involves the donation of works from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection to the Spanish state.
The latter is one of the most important collections of Latin American art and includes not only paintings, but also videos, projections, and photographs. Among the most significant names are Carmen Herrera, Cildo Meireles, Jesus Soto, Grete Stern, Horacio Coppola, Leo Matiz, and Paulo Pires.
