Luciano Pavarotti has a star on the Walk of Fame

The great tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who died in 2007, now has a star on the Walk of Fame.

The star dedicated to Luciano Pavarotti has been laid on the Walk of Fame: star number 2730, traditionally awarded by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and placed next to those of Sydney Poitier, Stan Lee, Ennio Morricone and Lina Wertmuller, precedes by a few days the 25th anniversary of the great Italian tenor’s passing. Present at the ceremony was daughter Cristina, representing sisters Lorenza, Giuliana and Alice, wife Nicoletta Mantovani and daughter Caterina. “When I think of my father, the paths he opened and the many emotions given and received, I feel a sense of vertigo,” she said.

Introduced by Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President Lupita Sanchez Cornejo, speakers included conductor James Conlon, music director of the Los Angeles Opera, who had a long professional relationship and friendship with the artist, and Cinzia Salvioli of the Italian film production company Albedo production, which coordinated the operation. Two Italian audiovisual testimonies that have never been broadcast in the United States were screened during the ceremony: the Messa da Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi, with the Rai’s Rome Symphony Orchestra and the Rai’s Milan and Rome Choirs conducted by Claudio Abbado in the Basilica of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva in Rome in 1970, and a selection of five excerpts from the last of three recitals that Pavarotti, accompanied on piano by Leone Magiera, gave at La Scala in 1983.

Then, on Friday, Aug. 26, an exhibition space dedicated to the maestro will be inaugurated at the Grammy Museum: among the items will be the score of Verdi’s Requiem Mass used by the tenor for his 1967 debut at La Scala conducted by Herbert von Karajan, on which are collected dedications from many of the great conductors with whom he interpreted it over 30 years.
