Louvre Abu Dhabi expected to open in November

The Louvre Abu Dhabi, the museum being set up by the Louvre in Paris in the UAE capital, is expected to open its doors next November, The Art Newspaper reports, citing sources close to the project. Apparently, an internal circular was circulated this week at the Louvre asking all departments to prepare to send several masterpieces this summer as part of a loan program with the Abu Dhabi venue (the works would include Leonardo da Vinci’s Belle Ferronniè;re). That would be 300 works added to the 700 in the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s collection.

Construction work meanwhile is proceeding apace and is nearing completion: in June, The Art Newspaper writes again, a technical team from France will visit the facility to ensure approval on the work done. The announcement of the opening date, however, should be imminent: predictions say it will fall between Nov. 11 (anniversary of the 1918 armistice, a public holiday in France) and either the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix (held at the end of the month) or the Emirates’ national holiday (Dec. 2).
