Twenty-three years after the sensational theft, Gustav Klimt ’s (Vienna, 1862 - 1918) Portrait of a Lady by Gustav Klimt (Vienna, 1862 - 1918) had been found in the garden of the Ricci Oddi Gallery in Piacenza on December 10. The painting was one of the most sought-after works in the world: it had been stolen between Feb. 19 and 21, 1997, and the discovery, inside a black sack placed in a niche, had come about thanks to gardeners who were carrying out some maintenance work in the museum’s courtyards.
Klimt’s masterpiece will soon be released from seizure by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and will thus soon be back in the possession of the Ricci Oddi Gallery. An investigation is still underway to identify the perpetrators of the theft, and to date three people are under investigation.
To prevent possible vandalism or another theft, the painting will be protected by a special armored glass case.
Meanwhile, the Piacenza museum headquarters is planning a major exhibition to mark the return of the Portrait of a Lady, which could already take place in September.
