June 29 will be Little Prince Day, 120 years after the birth of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

France has launched Little Prince Day: it will be June 29, marking the 120th anniversary of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's birth.

An international day dedicated to The Little Prince: the idea of Little Prince Day was launched by France to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, who was born June 29, 1900, in Lyon.

On June 29, not only France but the whole world will pay tribute to the writer’s masterpiece, The Little Prince, first published in 1943; it is the most widely read and best known French literary work in the world and has sold more than two hundred million copies.

Throughout the day, artists, pilots, writers, filmmakers and numerous personalities will celebrate through videos on the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Foundation’s social channels the evocative power of The Little Prince and the influences the novel has had on their lives.

Among the personalities involved are writer and cartoonist Joann Sfar; Dorine Bourneton, sole survivor of a plane crash and the world’s first disabled woman to perform aerobatics; Loïc Blaise, aviator and explorer with multiple sclerosis; fashion designer and photographer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac; aviator and psychiatrist Bertrand Piccard; and filmmaker Mark Osborne.

“In a global context where crises and tensions are multiplying,” the Foundation wrote in a note, "the humanistic values of The Little Prince are currently finding a very special resonance with the general public. Thanks to its evocative power and its ability to inspire us to build a better future together, everyone’s appropriation of the Little Prince ’s message will become richer and more varied. All that was missing was an international day to celebrate him. Now this date is there: next June 29."

He also disclosed that a major exhibition entitled Un Petit Prince parmi les Hommes will be held in the fall between Lyon and Toulouse, with many previously unpublished works on Saint-Exupéry’s life and work.
In his hometown of Lyon, the exhibition will illustrate the writer-aviator’s personal journey through multimedia installations and archival footage; in Toulouse, where Saint-Exupéry became a pilot, the strong passion and close connection with the sky and airplanes will be presented.

The exhibition will subsequently be mounted in Paris and Brussels.
