JULIA, the first virtual assistant designed to improve the experience of those living in and visiting Rome, is born. It is agenerative artificial intelligence developed to simplify everyday life and offer immediate access to reliable information about the Jubilee, transportation, events, culture and essential services. A tool that aims to revolutionize interaction with the city, making it more intuitive, accessible and engaging for everyone.
Its certified knowledge base is fed by official data from Roma Capitale and other validated sources. This enables it to provide accurate, up-to-date and contextualized answers in many cases in real time on a wide range of topics, including hotel searches, public transportation schedules, cultural events, Civil Defense alerts, the Jubilee calendar and the location of tourist infopoints. JULIA was developed with the support of Microsoft, which engineers the GPT-4o model, and in its first version was implemented by NTT Data. It is a continuously evolving project, with progressive updates that will progressively enrich its functionality with a view to ensuring an increasingly comprehensive and personalized service.
In its current version, JULIA can interact with users in more than 80 languages, provide information on events, exhibitions, shows and places of interest, provide real-time updates on mobility and public transportation with data on subways, buses, trains and flights, indicate cab fares and booking methods, report alerts and emergencies based on the user’s location with useful safety tips, and recommend restaurants, hotels and services based on personal needs. All this while always ensuring maximum protection of personal data in compliance with the GDPR.
The answers provided by JULIA include addresses, links and contacts to offer the most complete and detailed information possible. Available on WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and web chat, it is always operational to respond to requests in real time. Since it is an artificial intelligence-based technology, it may make mistakes, but thanks to user feedback it will continue to improve, refining its understanding of questions and refining the quality of answers. In addition to providing information, JULIA is designed to adapt to users’ needs, offering personalized suggestions and contextualized answers based on current city conditions. Its development is a key step in making Rome smarter and more interconnected.
