After twenty-five years, Johnny Depp is returning to filmmaking with a biopic inspired by the life of Amedeo Modigliani. The cast will also be unveiled soon.

Twenty-five years after Johnny Depp first went behind the camera with The Brave in 1997, the celebrated actor is returning to direct. This time of a biopic inspired by the life and art of Amedeo Modigliani (Livorno, 1884 - Paris, 1920). The film will be produced by Al Pacino and Barry Navidi, with support from IN.2.

The biopic will be set in Paris in 1916 and is an adaptation by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski of Dennis McIntyre’s play of the same name. It will narrate the Leghorn artist’s most turbulent forty-eight hours in the French capital that “marked a turning point in his life, finally cementing his reputation as an artistic legend,” according to a released note.



Production is scheduled to begin in Europe in spring 2023, and the cast is expected to be unveiled soon.

“I am truly honored to bring the saga of Mr. Modigliani’s life to the big screen,” said the actor and director. “It was a life of great hardship, but in the end comes the triumph: a universally human story that all viewers can identify with.”
