Entering the Unesco World Heritage List is the “Karst in the Evaporites and Caves of the Northern Apennines,” a serial site consisting of seven different areas located between the provinces of Reggio Emilia, Bologna, Rimini and Ravenna: Alta Valle Secchia, Bassa Collina Reggiana, Gessi di Zola Predosa, Gessi Bolognesi, Vena del Gesso Romagnola, Evaporites of San Leo, and Gessi della Romagna Orientale. These are areas united by the presence of rocks that have formed over millennia as a result of the evaporation of the marine waters that covered these areas and the concomitant concentration of mineral salts, including gypsum.
The Governing Council of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO had decided in January 2022 to propose the Emilia-Romagna karst as Italy’s nomination to the World Heritage List for 2023, and in November of the same year Unesco commissioner Gordana Beltram had carried out, as per procedure, a series of inspections and meetings with scientific experts, management bodies, and institutional and local stakeholders in order to get a closer look at the environmental, historical, and cultural heritage of the Emilia-Romagna Gypsums. The technical evaluation process was concluded in July 2023, and today came the final decision of the UNESCO International Committee.
“Our beautiful Italy brings home another extraordinary success. Yet another UNESCO achievement: with the inscription of ’Karst in the Evaporites and Caves of the Northern Apennines’ in the World Heritage List, the number of Italian sites that have obtained this recognition rises to 59. Truly a great satisfaction,” said Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Culture Lucia Borgonzoni.
