The Ministry of Culture has received 24 nominations for the 2024 Italian Capital of Culture city. Here are what they are.

Which city will succeed Brescia and Bergamo as the Italian Capital of Culture in 2024? It will be one of 24 cities that have submitted their candidacy to compete for the title, many of them small or provincial cities. They are Ala (Trento), Aliano (Matera), Ascoli Piceno, Asolo (Treviso), Burgio (Agrigento), Capistrano (Vibo Valentia), Chioggia (Venice), Cittadella (Padua), Conversano (Bari), Diamante (Cosenza), Gioia dei Marsi (L’Aquila), Grosseto, La Maddalena (Sassari), Mesagne (Brindisi), Pesaro, Pordenone, Saluzzo (Cuneo), Sestri Levante (Genoa), Siracusa, Viareggio (Lucca), Vicenza, Vinci (Florence). These are joined by two unions: the Unione Comuni Montani Amiata Grossetana (Grosseto), composed of Arcidosso, Castel del Piano, Castell’Azzara, Roccalbegna, Santa Fiora, Seggiano and Semproniano, and the Unione Comuni Paestum-Alto Cilento (Salerno), composed of Agropoli, Capaccio, Cicerale, Laureana Cilento, Lustra, Perdifumo, Prignano Cilento, Rutino and Torchiara. The nominations are evenly distributed: 7 cities in the north, 7 in the center, and 10 among the south and islands.

Now all participating cities will have to submit their projects, which will be submitted for evaluation by a panel of seven renowned experts in cultural heritage management. The winning city, thanks also to the state contribution of one million euros, will be able to showcase, for the period of one year, its original features and the factors that determine its cultural development, understood as an engine for the growth of the entire community.

The title of Italian Capital of Culture has been awarded since 2016, when the first capitals were, together, Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia, Ravenna and Siena. In 2017 it was Pistoia’s turn, in 2018 Palermo, in 2019 the title was not awarded because Italy had Matera as European Capital of Culture, then for 2020 and 2021 Parma, in 2022 Procida and in 2023, as mentioned, Bergamo and Brescia.

“The multi-year history of this challenge,” said Culture Minister Dario Franceschini, “has shown all the capacity of culture to set in motion virtuous mechanisms and paths of enhancement of all cities beyond the winner.”
