Work will soon begin to search for St. Mark’s third column in Venice: the last meeting was held on June 21 to set the start of the work, which will begin in October.
The third column is said to have sunk in front of today’s St. Mark’s Square in 1172, as it was being brought to shore along with the Todaro and Mark’s columns.
The project by Roberto Padoan, who will be assisted by technicians and archaeologists, has already won the consensus of the Venetian Superintendency, as well as the Port of Venice, technicians, entrepreneurs, gondoliers and shopkeepers.
The searches will be carried out using non-invasive techniques, such as electrical tomography, and without any consequences for the pavement of St. Mark’s and its monuments, and will take place at night in order not to disturb citizens and tourists.
