There was an interminable odyssey for the participants in the Ministry’s big competition, which ended in May after a tribulated process of almost three years that we have recounted in detail on these pages. The competition, as is now well known, recruited 1,052 access, reception and supervision assistants (AFAVs) to be distributed in Italian museums to replenish their staffs: at the end of the competition, the successful and unsuccessful candidates turned out to be 2,773. The last competition before the 2019-2022 competition was in 2008: this means that for more than a decade, there had been no replacement of vacancies as a result of retirements, transfers, layoffs, or even adequate turnover especially in recent years, and the gaps in supervisory staff have often been solved by resorting to external resources.
A group of successful contestants (Alessio Mastropietro, Alessia Arena, Giovanni Mautone, Laura Caraccio and Valentina Billante), representing their colleagues, reiterating that at the various state cultural places (not only museums but also archaeological parks, archives, libraries) there is a shortage of AFAV figures for about 4,000 units (a situation that is produced in the risk of closure for many institutes), let it be known that the Formez has not yet concluded the process. “You know perfectly well in what state cultural venues are in due to the tragic shortage of staff and that they are struggling to survive without any turnover,” the five eligible people write. “Counting in hand, there is a shortfall of 4,000 AFAV figures and we cannot explain how it is possible that the Mic does nothing to urge the Formez to conclude the competition process quickly despite the fact that the publication of the locations took place on June 14. In fact, the Formez has been stalled for months now in finalizing and correcting the final ranking list. Yet the oral tests ended at the end of February! One of our small delegation of eligible candidates last May had a meeting with the DG Organization during which the optimistic forecast of hiring the winners by summer 2022 had emerged, as well as an additional 400 eligible candidates within this year as the funds are already authorized, and then to have the entire ranking list flowing by next year.”
However, emphasize the five new assistants, “the hopes that this will happen are unfortunately, with each passing day, fading and instead fueling discontent among the 2,773 eligible contestants (1,052 successful + 1,771 non-winning eligible). This is not why we want to resign ourselves and remain at the mercy of events. We are thinking of actions that can lead the Mic to finally take a stand and proceed quickly with hiring and the total sliding of the ranking list.”
What the eligible candidates are therefore asking for is a fast procedure so that the 2,773 people who have dedicated three years of study, passed three tests including pre-selection, written test with as many as three bars and an oral test can take up their duties and “plug” the understaffing situation of the various cultural places that are in danger of closure.
Hurry up and wrap up the MiC competition process! The complaint of a group of winners |
