Premiering in Italian cinemas only on October 21, 22 and 23, 2019 Ermitage will be shown. The Power of Art, the new docu-film from La Grande Arte al Cinema. The documentary is produced by 3D Produzioni and Nexo Digital, made in collaboration with Villaggio Globale International and Sky Arte with the patronage of Hermitage Italy and the support of Intesa Sanpaolo; directed by Michele Mally on a subject by Didi Gnocchi, who also signs the screenplay with Giovanni Piscaglia, the docu-film aims to tell the story of the museum in a new way through the centuries of Russian history and the cultural events that led to the development of its collections. It is one of the world’s most beloved museums that holds three million art objects and is visited by more than 4.2 million people each year.
It will be actor Toni Servillo who will guide viewers through the halls of the famous museum, reciting excerpts from poems and novels, telling the great stories, from the founding of Peter I to the splendor of Catherine the Great, from the Revolution of 1917 to the present day. You will walk through the rooms of the museum and the Winter Palace, the Theater, Raphael’s Lodges, the Gallery of Heroes of 1812; as well as the Staraya Derevna restoration and conservation laboratories, the archaeological treasures and the Modern and Contemporary Art section of the General Staff Building, which houses the Shchukin and Morozov collections, with the largest Matisse collection in the world. Great European art will be admired, from Leonardo to Raphael, Van Eyck to Rubens, Titian to Rembrandt and Caravaggio; links with great literature will also be discovered, first and foremost Alexandr Pushkin (the house-museum houses the sofa in which he died, and in the Literary Café he used to enjoy good coffee), as well as with music and ballet.
The general director of the State Hermitage Museum Mikhail Piotrovsky, writer Orlando Figes, director of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts Semyon Michailovsky, curator of the Hermitage Flemish Art Department Irina Sokolova will speak, literary historian Evgeniy Anisimov, curator of the Hermitage Department of Venetian Art Irina Artemieva, art historian Ilia Doronchenkov, curator of the Library of Congress in Washington Harold Leich, and director of the National Gallery in London Gabriele Finaldi.
The docu-film’s soundtrack, Hermitage. The Power of Art, is signed by a new Russian talent, pianist and composer Dmitry Igorevich Myachin, and presented with ambient electronics by sound designer Maximilien Zaganelli, will be available on all digital platforms from Oct. 18.
