Herculaneum, completed the restoration of the House of the Deer

Restoration work on the House of the Deer at the Herculaneum excavations completed

Restoration work at the House of the De er at the Herculaneum Excavations has been completed. The interventions involved the facade, on which extraordinary maintenance of the plasterwork was carried out, and the original path connecting the terrace of Marcus Nonius Balbo to the ancient urban center was restored.

The work was carried out by the technical and scientific staff of the Archaeological Park, in collaboration with the Herculaneum Conservation Project, intervening on the older plasters that were almost coming off and on the newer ones.

The director of the Herculaneum Archaeological Park, Francesco Sirano, announced that during the restoration, extraordinary maintenance was carried out on all the plasters and the slanted canopy that had been placed to prevent them from falling off, causing a danger to visitors, was dismantled.

The House of the Deer was a domus with a terrace that belonged to a slave and has a ground floor and an upper floor, the gallery of which is visible. Significant is the frescoed cryptoporticus, decorated with still lifes. In the garden of the domus, however, are two statues of deer attacked by a pack of dogs: hence the name of the house. Also present are a satyr with wineskin and a statue depicting drunken Hercules.

Pictured is one of the statues with deer attacked by dogs.
