A perfume bottle inspired by an artist. This is not the first time this has happened: the last time was in 2021, when the Van Gogh Museum launched a perfume inspired byVincent van Gogh’sSunflowers. Now it is the turn of a famous fragrance house: in fact, Guerlain is collaborating with Maison Matisse (the design house founded in 2019 by some of Henri Matisse ’s heirs to produce objects inspired by the French painter’s art) to launch a limited-edition perfume bottle. It is none other than the French house’s iconic Bee Bottle reinterpreted in Matisse’s colors: only fourteen examples were produced, all hand-painted. The cost, certainly not modest, is not on Guerlain’s website but was revealed by Artnet magazine: a whopping 17,000 euros, for a product explicitly aimed at collectors. The bottle is inspired by La Musique, one of Henri Matisse’s most emblematic paintings, signed by the artist in 1939. And the Bee Bottle, which celebrates its 170th anniversary in 2023, has been decorated with an exclusive motif inspired by this masterpiece of modern painting. For the occasion, Guerlain perfumers composed Couleur Bonheur, a fragrance described as “fruity, sunny and bright” like the artist’s palette.
The bottle is decorated with a motif inspired by the leaves and guitar that appear in the painting, whose red and blue are also taken up. The idea, reads Guerlain’s website, is to combine “all the sense of rhythm and color found in the original painting, taking its distinctive motifs against a deep blue background and applying them using form and color that reflect the refined aesthetic of Maison Matisse’s creations.” In La Musique (1939), the love of music is combined with two other sources of inspiration dear to the painter. The first is feminine beauty, and the second is nature, present through the stylized philodendron leaves that dot the background of the composition.
Entirely hand-painted, each piece in Matisse’s Bee Bottle is described as an “exercise in high precision.” All the motifs are brush-painted, with great attention to detail. In short, if anyone has 17,000 euros to spare and is fond of perfume bottles, be warned....
