The Sicilian Region will acquire the original photographic plates of Giovanni Verga, thus becoming part of the public documentary heritage linked to the memory of the great writer, whose centenary of his death is being celebrated this year.

The rich material was sold at auction in Turin in recent days, and the Regional Council resolved to exercise the right of first refusal by authorizing the expenditure of 225,000 euros to purchase the photographs.

Consisting of 448 photographic documents that are also particularly interesting from a historiographical point of view, the corpus is a significant testimony to Verga’s artistic sensibility.
