Gillo Dorfles, one of today’s most influential art critics and philosophers and also known for his work as a painter, turns 107 today: the thinker and artist was in fact born in Trieste on April 12, 1910.
His long career spanned two centuries, and there are numerous writings and essays produced during his activity. Among the most recent releases of certain interest is the essay Gli artisti che ho incontrato (The Artists I Met), a sort of “summary” of 20th- and 21st-century art as experienced firsthand, while among the “historical” writings of considerable importance are works such as Le oscillazioni del gusto. L’arte d’oggi tra tecnocrazia e consumismo (from 1970 but republished by Skira in 2004) and Kitsch: antologia del cattivo gusto (the work that perhaps more than any other contributed to the spread of the concept of “kitsch”). Last year his Writings on Architecture produced from 1930 to 1998 were also republished by Silvana.
Gillo Dorfles has not stopped his artistic activity either. The Vitriol exhibition at the Milan Triennale , which showcased drawings made by the artist in 2016, recently concluded.
