A videoconference meeting was held this morning between Cultural Heritage Minister Dario Franceschini and German Tourism Minister Thomas Bareiss: at the center of the talks were plans to solve the tourism crisis sweeping Europe, and in particular the need to find common solutions.
Germany confirmed, through Minister Bareiss, that in recent weeks a number of European countries had proposed to it the creation of tourism corridors: the risk, which we spoke about at the end of April on these pages, was that some countries would enter into agreements to let their respective tourists travel without transiting third countries, or through reserved lines or roads. The idea had raised strong reactions in Italy, and several opposition politicians (including Rosanna Conte of the League, Luca Ciriani of Fratelli d’Italia, and Michela Biancofiore of Forza Italia) had asked the government to intervene to make sure that the hypothesis was averted.
So today came the stance of Germany, which although it has received proposals to establish tourist corridors, has rejected them: Berlin has ruled out any such bilateral arrangements, and Minister Bareiss agreed with Franceschini on the need for common European solutions. These solutions will have to go through the adoption of common health and safety rules at the European level to allow tourist travel within the Union, ensuring harmonized protocols both in terms of transportation and in terms of the standards that will have to be applied in the accommodation facilities of the different tourist destinations. All this is to protect not only travelers and the resident population but also operators in the sector.
Finally, Minister Franceschini recalled that a number of European countries including Italy, France, Spain and Greece have promoted an initiative in view of the measures that are expected to be approved in Brussels this week, hoping for the support of Germany, and called on the German federal government to give its full support to the hypothesis of allocating to the tourism sector a significant part of the “Recovery Fund” that should be adopted as part of the package of measures for the revival of the European economy.
