Vandals have been rampant in recent days against Genoa’s cultural heritage. After the raid about ten days ago inside Palazzo Boggiano Gavotti (also known as Palazzo Centurione Gavotti), an aristocratic mansion that was scarred with pink paint, today it was the church of San Donato, one of the city’s oldest and most valuable, that came under fire: among the works preserved inside it is the triptych by Joos van Cleve, the restoration of which has recently been completed (we had covered it in a lengthy article on these pages as well).
In particular, the vandals’ slashes affected the columns of the entrance portal, which were covered with writings made with spray cans. It seems that the action was carried out on the night between Saturday and Sunday. Local news site Genova Today released a photogallery with images of the defaced portal. This is not an isolated case: the Sarzano neighborhood, where the church of San Donato is located in the historic center of the Ligurian capital, is often targeted by writers who turn on artistic heritage. Investigations are ongoing on the recent incidents.
