Already causing discussion is the idea of Tourism Minister Massimo Garavaglia and Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri: to organize a remake of the 100-meter final of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the one won by our Marcell Jacobs (the first Italian medalist in the history of the competition), at the Imperial Forums. The idea is to recall the eight finalists and have them run alongside the Colosseum close to the next Republic Day: in addition to Marcell Jacobs, therefore, the U.S. Fred Kerley, silver medalist, Canada’s Andre De Grasse, bronze medalist, and then to follow South Africa’s Akani Simbine, the other U.S. Ronnie Baker, China’s Su Bingtian, Nigeria’s Enoch Adegoke and Britain’s Zharnel Hughes would appear.
“The images of Marcel Jacobs and the Olympic finalists competing along Via dei Fori Imperiali,” said Roma Capitale’s Councillor for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Alessandro Onorato, “will be an extraordinary spot to promote Rome to the world. A revisitation in a modern key of one of our most iconic places. Attending this event alone will be one more opportunity to return to visit Rome. Sports and Great Events are an important lever to generate tourist flows. On this directive together with Mayor Gualtieri we are working on the creation of a unique poster of the Great Events.”
“Thanks to Minister Garavaglia,” says Leghist deputy Claudio Durigon, “sport is once again becoming a global player. The League minister’s project is, in fact, to repeat in Via dei Fori Imperiali - close to Republic Day - the 100-meter flat final of the Tokyo Olympics, a final won by the extraordinary Marcell Jacobs. A very important sporting event at the international level and an excellent opportunity for our city, which needs to redeem itself after too many dark years due to a bad administration.”
The idea matured during a meeting between Garavaglia and Gualtieri organized to discuss issues related to the implementation of the Pnrr Tourism (Caput Mundi) in view of the Jubilee 2025. The meeting was thus also an opportunity to talk about something else entirely, as the performance would be scheduled for late spring of this year. Garavaglia and Gualtieri made it known that the intention is to involve other administrations, starting with the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Defense. The proposal currently enjoys bipartisan favor.
