Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano led the Italian delegation to the G20 Culture Ministers meeting in Varanasi, ancient Benares, on the banks of the Ganges River and among India’s holiest sites. “There are many qualifying points for Italy that were included in the final declaration of the G20 Culture,” the minister said. “Among them is a clear and strong reference to the international illicit trade in artifacts and works of art, an issue in which we Italians are particularly interested, because we are often victims of theft. I also judge important the commitment to the preservation and promotion of national cultural identities embedded in cultural heritage in all its forms. Just as qualifying for us is the commitment of the G20 to make the promotion of culture a goal of the sustainable development agenda at the United Nations.”
Sangiuliano also held a series of bilateral meetings dedicated to specific focuses. He met with U.S. Representative Lee Satterfield, India’s Minister of Culture and Tourism Kishan Reddy, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Margareth Menezes, and UNESCO Deputy Director General for Culture Ernesto Ottone Ramirez.
“There is a renewed interest in Italy and its international cultural projection,” added Minister Sangiuliano. “The G20 partners appreciate our ability to combine dialogue and defense of identity, placing culture at the center as a decisive factor for the life of nations and their social and economic development.”
