From today to Saturday all Italian museums are free. Undersecretary Vacca: the commitment does not stop here

Italian museums all free from March 5 to 10, 2019 for Museum Week. Undersecretary Vacca says MiBAC's commitment does not end at this initiative.

From today, Tuesday, March 5, until Saturday, March 10, 2019, all Italian state museums are free admission. The initiative was strongly desired by Minister Alberto Bonisoli, who derived the new freebies by “shifting” the free Sundays of the high season months to the month of March. In addition, with the new free plan, the opportunities to visit museums without paying, MiBAC claims, increase from 12 to 20 with the establishment of eight free days to be chosen by the directors.

“MiBAC’s commitment to boosting access to state cultural sites,” Undersecretary for Cultural Heritage Gianluca Vacca said today, “does not stop with this week. Compared to the past, we have increased the number of free admission days, bringing them from 12 to 20 in total: in addition to the 6 days during Museum Week, access to museums and archaeological sites is also free on the first Sundays of the month from October to March and on another 8 days chosen by the directors of autonomous museums and regional museum centers. Great attention then is paid to the youngest: for the under-18s admission is free always, while 18-25 year olds pay only 2 euros, when of course access is not free for everyone. A precise choice, with a twofold objective: to increase the hunger for culture in young people and to break down every obstacle, including economic ones, to the enjoyment of our wonderful cultural heritage.”

In Minister Bonisoli’s intentions (and he reiterated this again this morning in Rome, at Palazzo Altemps, the museum chosen as the venue to inaugurate the “week of museums”), the six free days concentrated in the first week of March are aimed more at citizens than tourists, and the idea is to bring the inhabitants of a place closer to their cultural heritage.

To learn about the places open for free you can go to the new website iovadoalmuseo.it. In the museums affected by the measure there will then be many initiatives: to find out about them you need to go to the Ministry’s website(here is the link to the page that collects all the events).
