Friuli, remains of a 15th century Dominican convent unearthed

In San Vito al Tagliamento, remains of the foundations of the mid-15th-century Dominican Convent have been found.

During redevelopment excavations in the historic center of San Vito al Tagliamento, in the Peppino Impastato square in front of the Municipal Civic Library, some remains of the structures of the Dominican Convent built in the mid-15th century in the hamlet of San Lorenzo, where the church dedicated to the saint also stood.
The rediscovered remains point to the foundations of wall structures that were hidden during the 19th century, when the present square was built.

Although the floors of the rooms were not identified, it was possible to reconstruct the floor plans of some rooms through the remains of the perimeter walls. Ceramic fragments used to make the mortar of the walls more solid confirm a date around the second half of the 15th century.

Thanks to the eighteenth-century historical cartography preserved in the State Archives of Venice, which reproduces the floor plan of the convent, it was also possible to identify the intended use of the rediscovered rooms, at least for what constitutes the last period of life of this part of the convent, the latter now housing the Civic Library. An entrance hall, a room dedicated to the school, a small courtyard and the room where the buratto, or a machine that in the past was used to separate flour from bran, was kept have been identified.

The redevelopment project will include information panels to acquaint citizens with part of their past.
