Friends of Doccia Association closes after 20 years of restoration and studies on Ginori

After two decades of commitment, the Friends of Doccia Association announces the closing of its activities at the Florence Biennale Internazionale dell'Antiquariato, presenting the completed restorations and the last volume of the Quaderni dedicated to Ginori porcelain.

After more than two decades dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the Ginori Manufactory’s heritage, theFriends of Doccia Association announced the conclusion of its activities on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, during the Florence Biennale Internazionale dell’Antiquariato. This event takes on special significance for the association, as it was at the 2003 Biennale that it began its adventure in support of the Ginori Museum and the manufactory’s historical collections.

During the meeting, which took place in the Throne Room of Palazzo Corsini, the latest restoration work completed in 2024 was presented. Among the restored works are a rare porcelain lamp designed by Gio Ponti for Richard-Ginori in the 1920s and two 18th-century terracotta sculptural groups depicting Bacchus and Ariadne and Venus and Love. Also recovered were two plaster models illustrating the first of the Twelve Labors of Hercules, one by Stefano Maderno and the other by Pietro Tacca, which will be previewed at the Biennale, pending the reopening of the Ginori Museum, currently under renovation.

A key project that enabled the funding of these restorations was Fracture, a collaboration started in 2019 with LAO Le Arti Orafe Professional Goldsmith School, where discarded fragments of Ginori porcelain were transformed into jeweled sculptures, which were then auctioned at Sotheby’s. The restorations were supervised by Giulia Basilissi, with interventions carried out by Gabriella Tonini and Louis Pierelli.

The meeting was attended by notable personalities, including Livia Frescobaldi, president of the Associazione Amici di Doccia; Fabrizio Moretti, secretary general of the Biennale; Laura Borghi, president of the Fondazione Officine Saffi; Oliva Rucellai, chief curator of the Museo Ginori; and Stefano Casciu, regional director of the National Museums of Tuscany .

Founded in 2003 by a group of enthusiasts and scholars, the association has restored 47 works and promoted Ginori porcelain internationally through exhibitions, symposia and publications. Livia Frescobaldi announced with great emotion the conclusion of the activities, explaining that the association’s goal has been achieved, with the Museo Ginori now entrusted to a Foundation and undergoing renovation.
