In late June, a tourist on vacation in Rome had carved his name and his fiancée’s name on a wall of the Colosseum with a key; yesterday morning, however, police stopped a 19-year-old French tourist while she was carving a column of the seventh ring on the Tower of Pisa, using a sharp object. An attendant at theOpera Primaziale noticed her carving a heart with two letters inside (the initial of her own name and that of her boyfriend) using a serpentine bracelet; the attendant called for police intervention.

The tourist was taken to police headquarters and, after admitting responsibility, was charged with aggravated damage to national archaeological, historical and artistic heritage.
