French fans in the city of Rome, exalted by yesterday’s World Cup victory, poured into Campo de’ Fiori and stormed the famous fountain, climbing and diving with chants, whistles and alcohol. It is a 19th-century copy of the Terrina fountain, a 1590 work by Giacomo della Porta (Porlezza, 1532 - Rome, 1602), which was initially located right in Campo de’ Fiori and was later moved in the late 19th century to Piazza della Chiesa Nuova.
Codacons has filed a complaint with the Prosecutor’s Office in order to identify those responsible for the damage and to prosecute them.
President Carlo Rienzi said, “We ask the judiciary to open an investigation for the crime of damaging the national archaeological, historical or artistic heritage. Regardless of the presence or absence of damage to the fountain, the behavior of the fans who like savages assaulted a cultural asset represents a disfigurement to the artistic heritage of the city. The Prosecutor’s Office must use the images of the incident to identify those responsible, opening criminal proceedings against them.”
Law enforcement officers and the Municipal Police on duty at Campo de’ Fiori allegedly did not prevent the assault on the fountain or intervene to stop the devastation, so Codacons has asked in the complaint that they also be prosecuted for omission of official acts. However, the fountain does not appear to have suffered any visible damage.
