As of Sunday, October 6, 2019, Free Sundays at the Museum are back: every first Sunday of the month it is possible to access state museums and cultural venues for free.
The current Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, Dario Franceschini, has decided to reintroduce Sunday at the Museum, an initiative introduced in July 2014 by himself and which this summer, at the end of July 2019, was the subject of a note published on the MiBAC website by former minister Alberto Bonisoli in which it was stated that free Sundays would in fact be abolished and that museum directors would decide where and when to introduce free entries.
In contrast, Dario Franceschini points out that it is “a much-loved initiative by Italian families who have thus rediscovered and reconnected with Italy’s cultural heritage,” and recalls that since the summer of 2014, thanks to Sundays at the Museum, some 15 million people have visited the state’s museums and archaeological parks for free.
On the MiBACT website you can see the full list of state places open for free for this initiative.
