MiBACT Minister Dario Franceschini participated in a videoconference with 140 UNESCO Culture Ministers convened by the international organization to discuss the impact of the pandemic on the world of culture. On this occasion, measures put in place in different countries to support workers in the creative industries and cultural institutions in this health emergency situation were shared, with the intention of fostering a dialogue and exchange of experiences between the countries affected first and those where the crisis is still developing, in order to guide prevention measures and anticipate or mitigate the impact of pandemic containment measures. Finally, possible recommendations to alleviate the impact of the health crisis on the cultural sector in the short, medium and long term were discussed.
"Let us work together under Unesco’s leadership to transform this dramatic crisis into a tool for a new global renaissance through culture, research and education": this was Minister Franceschini’s appeal.
During his speech, the latter stressed that “the overall situation now requires massive efforts by all the actors involved. The initiatives to be taken must go beyond the borders of individual countries and must be guided by solidarity and mutual aid. Once again, even in this crisis, we see how interdependent our societies are. A global, coordinated and sustained response is therefore needed to address a global challenge.”
“We must help the cultural sector,” the minister added, “both through social and economic support measures and by providing it with innovative tools related to new technologies. And we must increase the extraordinary capacity for innovation of our citizens, their willingness to prevail over the pandemic and work together for the common good.”
“It is our duty to seize the opportunities and identify the solutions that can overcome the crisis and sustain the recovery. We owe it to our communities, which in these difficult months have found in culture a safe haven,” he concluded.
