France, second scratch-off to save cultural heritage starts: 121 sites to benefit

France, second edition of heritage scratch card starts, which will save 121 endangered cultural properties.

The first edition, launched at the end of 2018, had been a success: Mission Patrimoine, or the French scratch card designed to raise resources for the recovery of cultural assets to be saved, had raised an impressive 22 million euros, all of which went to endangered buildings and works. The second round will be preceded by a special edition of the lottery game to be held on July 14 for the French people’s holiday, and the sale of scratch cards will begin in September: there will be a 15-euro ticket that will guarantee a maximum win of 1.5 million euros and a cheaper 3-euro ticket that will give players a chance to win a maximum prize of 30 thousand euros.

The French Ministry of Culture, Fondation du Patrimoine and Mission Stephane Bern, the organizers of the initiative, announced in these hours the 121 properties that will be the subject of the interventions that can start with the resources collected. Among others, there are the Fesch Library in Ajaccio, Sainte-Marie Abbey in Longues-sur-Mer, the Gallo-Roman amphitheater in Saintes, four historic manufactures of ceramics in Limoges, the citadel of Bitche, the manor of Courboyer, the Maison Bleue de Da Costa, the chapel of “Notre-Dame des Cyclists” in Armagnac, the Maison de la Gaieté in Chérac, the Château Ripaille in Thonon-les-Bains, the Fort de Girolata in Osani in Corsica. There is also no shortage of interventions in overseas territories, such as the Bel-Air chapel in Reunion Island or the Tsingoni mosque and minaret in Mayotte. The sites were selected from a base of a thousand candidate projects, taking as criteria the urgency of the interventions, the economic impact on the territory, and the state of preservation of the buildings.

Compared to last year, the selected sites are less than half: “this,” the organizers point out, “will allow better financing of the projects if the heritage lottery and scratch-off achieve the results of 2018.” In fact, the organizers have set the goal of exceeding the 22 million euros raised with the previous edition; in particular, expectations are to raise between 25 and 30 million euros.
