From September 3 to October 4, 2020, Yerevan will host the exhibition Venice and St. Mark's Square. The Eighteenth Century in Four Masterpieces to Celebrate Italy in Armenia.

Four masterpieces of the Venetian eighteenth century will be transferred to Armenia, Yerevan, on the occasion of the exhibition Venice and St. Mark’s Square. The Eighteenth Century in Four Masterpieces, to be held from September 3 to October 4, 2020, at the Presidency of the Republic of Armenia. This is the exhibition that will celebrate Italy ’s start of the year at the helm of the European Union Network of Cultural Institutes (Eunic), which is based in the Armenian capital.

The four paintings, depicting Venice and St. Mark’s Square, come from the collection of the Paolo and Carolina Zani Foundation and were created by great artists such as Canaletto, Bernardo Belotto, Michele Marieschi and Francesco Guardi.

Masterpieces that tell the story of the famous Venetian square and its monuments, the historical myth of the Serenissima, the Republic whose good government was also extolled by Francesco Petrarch “which City is the only hotel in our days of freedom, justice, peace, the only refuge of the good...” (Letter to Pietro da Bologna, August 10, 1321).

“Canaletto, Bellotto, Marieschi and Guardi,” explain the curators, “were conscious, through their views of Venice, of offering us the last fragment of a memory and, at the same time, the beginning of a contemporaneity made up of ’portraits’ each time different: In the waters of the calli and in marble and stone encrusted with brackish, in shadows and reflections, in the very particular air of a city that generations of artists have been able to render through light or intense colors, transparent and changing.”

The project, under the joint High Patronage of the President of the Republic of Italy and the President of the Republic of Armenia, is one of the initiatives promoted by the Italian Ambassador to Yerevan Vincenzo Del Monaco to celebrate Italian art with four masterpieces of Vedutist painting from the collection of the Paolo and Carolina Zani Foundation House Museum for Art and Culture.
