For the historic West Villoresi truck stop, a conservation reconstruction project

For the Villoresi Ovest service station on the A8 Milan-Varese, demolished in July, there is talk of 'conservative reconstruction'.

Autogrill has clarified what will be the fate of the historic Villoresi Ovest service station, the futuristic building that since 1958 has welcomed travelers on the A8 Milan-Varese highway: a masterpiece of architect Angelo Bianchetti (Milan, 1911 - 1994), it was demolished in early July, with only the structure composed of three self-supporting arches left standing.

An icon of Italian architecture of those years, the Villoresi Ovest station will undergo an intervention of “conservative reconstruction of the original design” (this is the expression used by Autogrill), scheduled for completion inautumn 2020: the works, Autogrill explains, “aim to reconstruct the original building with all the most modern building standards, in line with the safety and earthquake-proof regulations currently in force, thanks to a series of interventions aimed at improving the structure and optimizing it aesthetically and energetically.” In particular, the company’s note continues, “ongoing work includes equipping the iconic tripod with a new lighting system that will further increase its visibility at night. The truncated cone-shaped central building at the base of the structure, on the other hand, will be rebuilt with modern, energy-efficient materials, such as double-chamber glazing with UV-filtering films. The heating plant will be relocated externally to improve the aesthetics and functionality of the building.”

The building’s flooring will consist of Active Ceramic tiles that purify the air and will be active even during hours of darkness, with the goal of preventing bacterial and fungal presence and making the environment healthy and sanitized. “In order to relaunch a strategic location with great historical value for the brand,” the company concludes, “Autogrill is working on a new dedicated conceptthat will also be a tribute to the opening date of the historic eatery (1958) and will see its opening in Villoresi Ovest.”
