For Maundy Thursday, the Cenacolo Vinciano opens its doors to inmates of Opera prison

For Maundy Thursday, the Cenacolo Vinciano in Milan will open its doors to inmates of the Opera prison. For the director of the Museums of Lombardy, Emanuela Daffra, this appointment will have to become systematic.

Today the Cenacolo Vinciano will open its doors to special visitors: inmates of Milan’s Opera prison. This was announced by Emanuela Daffra, Regional Director Museums Lombardy.

“On the evening of Maundy Thursday, thanks to the sponsorship of American Express supported by the dealer Verona83, the visit to Leonardo’s masterpiece will be possible at the symbolic cost of one euro and - crowning a path with the Opera Prison - will be mainly intended for those who, for the most diverse reasons, could hardly access it. Among them will be a group of inmates from the Opera Prison, with whom the Musei Lombardia regional directorate has a dedicated project in place, and their family members; Caritas Ambrosiana assistants and operators; residents of the suburbs involved in the Cenacolo Live project; cooperatives and associations that deal with facilitation, reception and interculturalism.”

Welcoming the guests in addition to Emanuela Daffra will be the director of the Opera Prison, Silvio Di Gregorio, and Cenacolo director Silvia Zanzani. The visit to Leonardo’s Last Supper, in collaboration with the Casa dello Spirito e delle Arti Foundation, will be accompanied by music by maestro Issei Watanabe. He will play a cello produced in the carpentry workshop of the Opera Prison by reusing wood from barges shipwrecked off the coast of Lampedusa.

"The visit In Coena Domini that we propose on this occasion,“ hopes Director Daffra, ”should become a constant, a special moment of reflection to be repeated every Maundy Thursday, to emphasize the truly universal value of this painting, the manifold depth of meanings that it holds."

The evening is part of a program aimed at encouraging more than just superficial tourist approaches to Leonardo’s masterpiece and is part of the cycle of seventeen special openings that the Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano has organized thanks to the sponsorship of American Express, to offer new possibilities for visiting Leonardo’s masterpiece.
