The major restoration of the interior of the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence has begun. The Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, which cares for the famous monument along with Giotto’s cathedral and bell tower, has set up large scaffolding on the marble walls in recent weeks, and yesterday the very first steps of the vast operation to clean the surfaces, which will also involve recovery operations on the columns and mosaics, began. With the passage of time, in fact, the marbles and all the other architectural structures of the Baptistery have become noticeably dulled by dirt and deposits of candle smoke, losing much of their original brightness.
The most admired portion of the floor, the evocative depiction of the Zodiac, will also be restored: ruined and worn by centuries and centuries of trampling, it will be cared for until it regains the perfection of its ancient forms.
