Florence, restoration of Palazzo Vecchio's Sala degli Elementi is nearly complete

Part of the restoration of the ceiling of the Sala degli Elementi in Palazzo Vecchio has been completed, making its frescoes visible again. The restoration, which began in 2017, is the result of an €800,000 grant from the Giulio and Giovanna Sacchetti Onlus Foundation and is part of the Flic (Florence I care) project, which involves private individuals in the restoration of the city’s cultural heritage. The restoration, expected to be completed in the spring, is divided into two phases: the first, costing €475,000, is dedicated to the walls, while the second, costing €345,000, involves the ceiling. The restoration work includes cleaning operations, plastering, repair of cracks and detachments of material, recovery of the original colors and decorations of the wooden parts.

Dario Nardella, mayor of Florence, commented, "At last we are about to restore to its full beauty a majestic and precious room that opens the Quarter of the Elements and overlooks the Terrace of Saturn. The museum in Palazzo Vecchio has been at the center of a widespread enhancement project for several years, which aims to expand the museum area, increase services to the public, and restore valuable rooms. The Hall of the Elements, whose last restoration dates back to the 1960s, is so called because it is decorated with allegorical frescoes representing the four elements: Water(Birth of Venus),Earth (Earth’s First Offerings and Saturn), Fire(Forge of Vulcan) and Air(Saturn mutilating Heaven, pictured).
