Excited moments inFlorence and, more precisely, in Piazza della Signoria: on the evening of Thursday, October 5, around 7:15 p.m., one of the wax statues by Urs Fischer placed on the arengarium of Palazzo Vecchio, the one representing Fabrizio Moretti, curator of the exhibition project, collapsed .
The statue is part, along with the other wax one portraying critic Francesco Bonami and Big Clay #4, the ten-meter metal colossus (here is our editorial on the work), of the exhibition by Urs Fischer, a Swiss artist who had already created such a project in 2011 for the50th Venice Biennale, where he made a wax, life-size copy of Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabine.
The wax statues for the Palazzo Vecchio, on the other hand, were made for the“In Florence”project , the same event we reported on in this news story, and were supposed to melt away completely in January 2018, the month in which the exhibition would come to its conclusion, but one of them failed to make it to the scheduled deadline.
Fortunately, there were no people involved in the incident, just a few startled visitors or passersby. Unknown for now are the reasons for the accident: it will need to be ascertained whether it was damage caused by a problem with the balance of the sculpture, or by the failure of the support. Hypotheses that, at the moment, appear the most likely. Meanwhile, the work, irreparably damaged, has been removed from its exhibition location.
