A new permanent lighting system has been inaugurated in Florence ’s Piazza San Marco, one of the city’s busiest squares, where the church of the same name and the National Museum of San Marco, with masterpieces by Beato Angelico, face each other. In fact, an intervention by Firenze Smart aimed at providing complete remodeling and improved lighting for the church and other areas of the square has been completed in recent days.
The facade of the church now has a warm white light that gives greater prominence to the monuments, to ensure a perception of the architecture of greater depth, with the goal of sobriety and elegance, in line with the style that distinguishes the church of San Marco. An installation was also made for the statue of Manfredo Fanti (which was previously dark), the visual centerpiece of the axis of Via degli Arazzieri for those entering the square. And finally, new light was given to the greenery of the flower beds that symmetrically demarcate the pedestrian space of the square. The installation consisted of only seven LED floodlights with warm white light, selected with different optics and accessories, with a total power of only 200W.
“Placing new lighting,” emphasizes Mayor Dario Nardella, “does not only mean acting in an environmental perspective, reducing consumption, and greater safety, but it is also a cultural choice: now the church and the entire square will enjoy a light that enhances and highlights its architectural and artistic beauty. With this operation we continue in our important operation of replacing the lighting fixtures and improving the output both in the center and in the other neighborhoods, to add not only safety and savings but also beauty. My hope is also that this new lighting will help all of us to be more aware of the beauty, the history of our monuments as well as the physical and architectural relationship they have with the rest of the city.”
