Florence, major work starts at Orsanmichele (which closes until September) and Casa Martelli

Two major restorations, securing, rearrangement and improved access to the Orsanmichele Museum and the Casa Martelli Museum are starting in Florence. Orsanmichele will have to close to the public until September: some masterpieces will be moved to the Bargello.

At the Bargello Museums in Florence, and in particular at two museums that are part of the cluster, namely the Orsanmichele Museum and the Casa Martelli Museum, extraordinary restoration, securing, rearrangement and access improvement works are starting. These are two important worksites that are part of the Great Projects for Cultural Heritage (GPBC) of the Ministry of Culture. The tenders for the works at Orsanmichele and Casa Martelli were awarded to Invitalia: for the Orsanmichele complex the contractual consideration is € 1,135.026.43 and the Works Management will be by Tommaso Barni, while for the intervention at Casa Martelli the contractual consideration is € 840,296.46 and the Works Management will be by Laura Bastianini.

The Orsanmichele Complex will necessarily have to close to the public for a few months, while at Casa Martelli, where the works will not affect the current exhibition itinerary but the rooms on the ground floor, which have never been used until now, the opening hours will be extended. As of January 16, 2023, in fact, visitors will be offered one more chance to visit the Casa Martelli Museum: it will be open not only on Saturday mornings (from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.), but also on Tuesday afternoons from 1:15 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. (also free of charge). The Orsanmichele Museum, on the other hand, will be temporarily closed to the public from December 12, 2022 to September 22, 2023 inclusive (during this week, in addition to the two openings on Tuesday the 6th and Saturday the 10th there will also be an extraordinary opening on December 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). The church will remain open until January 15, 2023 with the usual hours to the public, that is, Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., after which it will also close until September 22. During the period between December 13 and January 14, the entrance fee to the church will be reduced from 4 to 2 euros.

During the closure for works of the Orsanmichele Museum three of the greatest masterpieces of monumental bronze statuary of the Renaissance, Lorenzo Ghiberti’s St. John the Baptist, Andrea del Verrocchio ’s TheIncredulity of St. Thomas, and Giambologna’s St. Luke will be temporary “distinguished guests” at the National Bargello Museum in spring 2023.
