Firenze Game, the smartphone app that teaches the history of Florence to children and teens, has arrived. The app, created by the City of Florence, Linea Comune, Muse and Digital Fun, consists of a card game with which to challenge friends online: the base deck contains cards of various colors, one for each historical period, and to win the cards will have to be arranged on a virtual board in such a way as to create thematic pairs or tris. Places, symbols and historical figures will “meet” during the games, giving users the chance to experiment with winning combinations and learn about the history hidden behind each card. In addition, each player will be able to add new cards to their deck by moving around the city, near squares, monuments and museums. For example, in Piazza Signoria, the cards of Cosimo I, Palazzo Vecchio and the Turtle with the Sail will be unlocked; moving to the banks of theArno River, near the Galileo Museum, the deck can be enriched with a planisphere or a telescope; continuing to the Uffizi, users will get the card of Leonardo and theVitruvian Man.
Fabio Viola, game designer and co-founder of Digital Fun, specified, “A project, that of Firenze Game, which combines digital experience and physical exploration of urban space to stimulate the involvement of new generations towards the extraordinary cultural heritage of the city of Florence. Florence proves to be a pioneering reality in using new languages such as video games to tell its story and develop audience engagement policies.”
Cecilia Del Re, Councillor for Economic Development and Tourism, explains, “To talk to younger people we need to draw their attention with tools close to them and use more and more languages and tools close to them. That’s why, thanks to Fabio Viola, a 27-year-old Tuscan start-upper, we came up with a digital game to introduce the history of Florence in a fun way through characters, symbols and attractions more or less beaten by tourist flows. In fact, the most valuable cards of the Firenze Game were hidden in the corners of the lesser-known Florence, which we want to promote more and more. The ideas of a young start-up are thus merged with the prerogatives of a public administration.”
The app is made by the City of Florence, with Linea Comune, Muse and Digital Fun, and can be downloaded for free through the Apple Store and Google Play Store. The game is available in Italian and English.
