Florence, Fortezza da Basso restoration to begin in late summer

Florence, the Fortezza da Basso restoration project will start in late summer. Work is expected to last one year.

The restoration of the Fortezza da Basso will start at the end of the summer. In fact, the council has approved the executive project of the first batch of works, amounting to 2 million euros. The intervention concerns the restoration and enhancement of the external curtain walls between the Rastriglia bastion, the Bellavista bastion and the Alla Campagna gate, on the side of the Piazzale Montelungo parking lot. The work includes the conservative restoration of the outer walls in addition to some safety work in the areas pertaining to them and the archaeological investigations necessary to start the enhancement of part of the walkways and the counter tunnels at the base of the ramparts. The recovery plan, in fact, calls for the launching of routes and itineraries for public use that will be tested starting from the construction site. The work will last just under a year.

The total amount of the Fortress recovery works, approved in December 2016, is 142 million euros, to be financed partly with contributions from the Chamber of Commerce, partly with resources from the Pact for Florence, and partly with its own resources. In particular, the Pact for Florence allocates 680 million to a series of interventions, from tramways to the enhancement of the Fortezza da Basso, from the removal of asbestos from theIsis da Vinci to bike paths to the expansion of the Santa Maria Novella museum.

Mayor Dario Nardella said, "We are finally starting with the enhancement of this important city monument, strategically located in the historic center and well connected to the central station and in a few months to the tramway. A real jewel, an ideal venue for exhibitions and congresses and major events such as Pitti Uomo. Joint work like this shows that institutional collaboration is essential to achieve shared goals in the city’s interest. The Fortress is another of those strategic works for Florence and for the lives of its citizens that has been long awaited and finally unblocked."
